Background and Future Prospects (Will it be merged into Core?)
This plugin was actually born during Automattic's internal "Radical Speed Month" hackathon in May 2026. Developed in just a few days by engineers like Daniel López Sánchez and Roberto Aranda, it is a truly passion-driven experimental project.
Because it represents such an extreme UI paradigm shift, it's highly unlikely that Desktop Mode will be integrated as-is into the future WordPress core. The core Gutenberg project is currently focusing on Phase 3 (Collaboration) and a steady modernization of the admin design. Suddenly turning the dashboard of tens of millions of websites into an OS would demand an unrealistically high learning curve for most users.
However, it brilliantly executes the ambitious thought experiment of "What if WordPress were a web-based OS?" The UI insights gained here—such as multitasking workflows and AI command palette integration—might very well influence the evolution of the standard WordPress UI in the future.
While it isn't a must-have for every user, it's definitely worth checking out if you're a power user who constantly juggles multiple admin tabs, or a developer curious about the possibilities of new UI paradigms.
